At least 20 Nigerian army personnel were killed when militants attacked a military base in Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, according to information from a security source and local residents.

Suspected Islamist insurgents have killed at least 20 Nigerian soldiers, including a commander, in an attack on an army base in a remote town in northeastern Borno state, the source said.

As noted, the attack, which is allegedly behind the terrorist organization Islamic State West African Province, occurred on Friday. One of the soldiers who survived the attack told the agency that the troops were taken by surprise and the armed clashes lasted more than three hours. Several soldiers were injured, the source added.
