WHO will cut costs after Trump’s announcement to leave the organization.

The World Health Organization will cut its costs, freeze hiring and move meetings online after the United States announced its withdrawal from the organization, the organization said in an internal document.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed executive orders to withdraw the country from the WHO and the Paris climate agreement.

“As you know, the United States of America has announced that it intends to withdraw from the WHO. We regret this decision and hope that the new administration will reconsider it. This announcement has strained our financial situation… (WHO) is suspending recruitment at in all but the most critical areas… (and) significantly reduces travel costs,” the organization’s head, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said in a letter to WHO staff.

In addition, all WHO meetings will now be held online, except in rare cases, and missions to provide technical support to other countries should be “limited to the most essential.” Other cost-saving measures include limiting the replacement of IT equipment, renegotiating key contracts, and suspending office renovations and the organization’s capital investment.
