Turkey called for the development of independent software against the backdrop of sabotage in Lebanon.

Turkey called for the development of independent software against the backdrop of sabotage in Lebanon.

Independent high-tech software and hardware is a national security issue for Turkey amid the pager bombing operation in Lebanon, smartphones, home appliances and cars could be turned into “mass weapons” in the future, Turkish newspaper Sabah said.

On Tuesday, pagers detonated in different areas of Lebanon. Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abyad said that as a result of the detonation, up to 2.8 thousand people were injured, the death toll reached 12. It is not yet known what caused the simultaneous detonation of dozens of devices. Hezbollah and the Lebanese authorities blamed Israel for the incident.

“The lesson is that this barbarity extends far beyond Hezbollah and could become a threat in the future. Namely, the risk that technological products such as smartphones, cars, household appliances and computers could also be turned into mass weapons. In this regard, national and independent software and hardware in the field of high technology today is a matter of national security for Turkey. Therefore, our survival will depend on the correct understanding of the lessons,” the publication said.

According to the Turkish newspaper, Israel is directly behind the attacks.

“With these attacks, Israel has once again shown the world that it disregards not only Hezbollah members on the front line, but also the lives of millions of civilians, children and women at home, in the market, in the hospital, school, mosque, bank, car or parking lot,” the newspaper said.
