Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica refused further cancer treatment and said goodbye to his compatriots.

He added that his body could not withstand either surgery or chemotherapy. In the interview, he said goodbye to his compatriots.

The 89-year-old Mujica’s statement instantly became one of the top news stories in Latin America. Leading publications in countries publish his words on the front pages of newspapers and magazines.

The ex-president of Uruguay is widely known throughout the world; he is respected not only by left-wing politicians, to which he himself belongs, but also by people of right-wing views. Mujica has been called the poorest president in the world. He always lived in his rural house, even as head of state, he donated his salary to charity, being content with a tenth of it.
