A tsunami threat has been announced off the coast of Tonga

A tsunami threat was announced off the coast of Tonga in Oceania after the earthquake, American seismologists and meteorologists reported.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremors were recorded at 12:18 UTC, 90.5 kilometers southeast of the city of Pangai on the islands of the kingdom of Haapai with a population of about 1,700 people.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned that, based on preliminary parameters, tsunami waves are possible within a radius of 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred on Sunday off the coast of Tonga. There was no information about casualties or damage.
