Grossi intends to become the next UN Secretary General

Argentine diplomat and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi expressed his intention to nominate his candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations after the completion of Antonio Guterres’ mandate in 2026, La Nacion newspaper reported.

“The selection process for Guterres’ successor has not yet begun, it will begin at the end of the year, when the relevant call for nominations will be published within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly… I’m thinking about it, and I’m thinking about it very seriously,” Grossi said at a meeting of the Argentine Council on Foreign Relations (CARI), quoted by Nacion on its website.

Grossi noted that he maintains close contacts with Argentine President Javier Miley and discussed with him a wide range of international issues, including “many conversations on this topic.”

Rafael Grossi, born in Buenos Aires in 1961, has more than 35 years of diplomatic service experience. He has held various senior positions, including Ambassador of Argentina to Austria and Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna. In December 2019, he was appointed Director General of the IAEA and re-elected for a second term in March 2023.
