Athef Najib, the cousin of the former president of Syria Bashar al -Assad on the maternal line, was detained by the new authorities of the country. This statement was made by the Syria TV channel.

 

Information about exactly where and under what circumstances the detention occurred is not given. It is noted that under Assad, Najib served as head of the political security department in Deraa’s province in the south of the country.

 

The new Syrian authorities have not yet commented on this information.

 

At the end of November 2024, armed opposition formations began a large -scale attack on the position of the Syrian army. On December 8, they entered Damascus, after which the government forces left the city. Bashar al -Assad resigned his powers of the President of Syria and left the country. On December 10, Muhammad al-Bashir, who from January 2024 headed the so-called rescue government formed by the opposition in the Idlib province, announced his appointment to the head of the Syrian government for the transition period, which will last until March 1, 2025. The actual leader of Syria was the head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group Ahmed al-Sharaa, known under the nickname of Abu Muhammad al-Julani. On January 29 of this year, the new authorities announced that Ash Sharaa would fulfill the duties of President Syria for a transitional period.
