The Canadian Foreign Ministry said the US accession was not discussed

The Canadian Foreign Ministry has clarified that the possibility of Canada joining the United States was not discussed during recent diplomatic meetings.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated that the topic of Canada becoming part of the U.S. did not arise during her discussions with American officials in Washington. She emphasized that Canada would never become a U.S. state or colony, reaffirming the country’s commitment to its independence and national identity.

Earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump had suggested that Canada could benefit from significant tax reductions if it were to join the United States as the 51st state. Trump had publicly floated the idea of incorporating Canada into the U.S. on multiple occasions, but the proposal was consistently rejected by Canadian officials, who stressed the importance of maintaining Canada’s sovereignty.

“Absolutely not,” Joly stated when asked whether the issue of Canada joining the U.S. had been discussed during her visit. “We can be really good friends, best friends, but we will never be a state or colony. Period,” she concluded.
