Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

“President Bola Tinubu was re-elected Chairman of the Council of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS,” the agency said.

It is noted that Tinubu was first elected to this post in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.

The ECOWAS Chairman appointed Senegalese President Bassira Diomai Fay and Togolese President Faure Essosimne Gnassingbé as special envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali and the Niger Republic.

Earlier, the head of the ruling National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland (CNSP) in Niger, General Abdurrahman Tchiani, said that the peoples of the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES, which includes Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso) “once and for all” turned their backs on ECOWAS. The Nigerian leader also called for the AES to be made “an alternative to any artificial regional unification by creating a sovereign community of peoples, a community far from the control of foreign powers.” According to Tchiani, the Sahel Alliance is “the only sub-regional association effective in the fight against terrorism.”
