The United States has notified its NATO allies of its intention to stop planning future exercises in Europe, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reports, citing sources.
⠀
“As it became known, the United States has notified its allies of its intention to stop participating in the planning of upcoming military exercises in Europe. This decision will affect a number of exercises in Sweden,” mass media noted.
⠀
As specified, this applies to those exercises in which the United States plays an important role. According to the newspaper, the termination of planning will not apply to the exercises that will be held in 2025.
⠀
“This will mean that Sweden and other NATO countries will be forced to plan exercises without American participation or with the participation of only small American units,” local media told.
⠀
The US presence at military exercises was a frequent occurrence in Sweden long before the country joined NATO.
⠀
Sweden joined NATO on March 7, 2024.
⠀
Earlier, US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the work of the alliance and threatened to withdraw the United States from NATO if European partners did not bear greater financial responsibility for their own security.
