Spain’s corruption prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the far-right Vox party on suspicion of illegal financing following a complaint filed by the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

According to sources, “On December 13 (2024), the PSOE filed a complaint against Vox with the country’s general prosecutor’s office for irregular financing after conducting an “exhaustive” analysis of the financing of the party led by Santiago Abascal.”

Thus, the Prosecutor General for Combating Corruption, Alejandro Luzon, decided to initiate proceedings, considering there were sufficient grounds to investigate possible violations.

According to the PSOE, since 2020, Vox has been able to collect cash at party events through so-called “piggy banks” and “cash boxes” without reporting these receipts. The Socialists estimate the amount of such revenues at 5 million euros. In addition, the complaint mentions a loan of 6.5 million euros received by the party from the Hungarian bank MBH Bank Nyrt, the main shareholder of which is the Hungarian state Fund. According to Spanish law, political parties are prohibited from receiving funding from foreign government agencies.

Vox has confirmed that it has received more than 9 million euros from MBH Bank to finance the 2023 election campaigns. According to representatives of the party, Spanish banks refused to provide loans to it.
