Britain has declared the need for a defense command structure in Europe

Europe needs to create its own defense command structure in case NATO resources become unavailable to it, former British Defense Minister Michael Heseltine said.

“We in Europe must fill the security gap that America creates, but simply spending more on defense is not enough. Europe should conduct its own critical defense analysis, led by Britain, France and Germany, to establish a potential command structure in case the NATO alliance became inaccessible,” Heseltine said.

This analysis, according to Heseltine, should include ensuring the compatibility of weapons systems, as well as procurement and research financing policies.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday a plan to arm Europe, which is expected to raise up to 800 billion euros for defense. It contains a package of loans for air defense and the possibility of using funds from the cohesion policy program.
