Turkey may be threatened with exclusion from NATO due to the position of the country’s authorities on the membership of Finland and Sweden in the alliance. This became known from unofficial sources close to the alliance.

“There were already many thoughts about expelling Turkey from NATO, especially after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan bought Russian S-400 air defense systems from Russia three years ago,” the source said.

He added that such a decision could weaken the position of the North Atlantic Alliance in a strategically important region.

Erdogan has been called a “useful friend” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is believed that the Russian head of state has enough allies around the world to prevent Western alliances from hindering his ambitions.

Earlier, Erdogan said that he would not approve of the membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO, and asked the leadership of the countries not to be offended by him. He recalled that Helsinki and Stockholm actively support the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which is constantly being fought in Turkey.
