The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed a strong protest to the charge d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Baku, Seyyid Jafar Aghai Marian, due to offensive statements addressed to President Ilham Aliyev, the department’s press service reported.

“The Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan, Seyyid Jafar Aghai Marian, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan. During the meeting, a strong protest was expressed to the Iranian side due to the fact that Seyyed Hassan Ameli made offensive statements against Azerbaijan and the head of our state,” the statement said.

In addition, the diplomat was expressed concern about the open incitement of anti-Azerbaijani sentiments among the population recently. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that such propaganda does not correspond to the spirit of bilateral relations, as well as the goals and objectives set for the two countries.

The incident occurred on December 29. The representative of the highest leader of Iran in the province of Ardabil, the imam-jumah of Ardabil, Seyyed Hassan Ameli, speaking on the Tehran TV “News Network”, voiced a number of anti-Azerbaijani statements.
