The United States does not view Africa as a Cold War arena, the White House said.

The United States does not view the African continent as an arena for a new Cold War and is not asking countries in the region to choose between cooperation with Washington, Russia and China, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Monday.

“There is no Cold War on the continent. We are not asking countries to choose between the United States, Russia and China. We are simply looking for reliable, sustainable and transparent investment opportunities that the people of Angola and throughout Africa can rely on,” Kirby told reporters.

He said U.S. policy towards Africa is aimed at creating economic and social opportunities that contribute to the region’s long-term development, rather than at confrontation with other major powers.
