Gas withdrawal from storage facilities in the European Union is proceeding faster than a year ago.

Gas withdrawal from EU storage facilities is proceeding faster than a year ago, but reserves are still about 70%, which can be considered above average, European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a briefing in Brussels.

“As for the security of gas supplies, we note that there is a high selection compared to January last year, but reserves are still at 70%, this is a high level, it is above average,” she said.

The EC representative also added that the Commission is in contact with countries affected by the termination of the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

“We are conducting technical and political contacts with affected EU member states, Moldova and Ukraine, to prepare for the consequences and monitor the situation,” she said.

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen recalled that the European Commission was not part of the transit agreement.

“The European Commission was not part of the agreement on gas transit through Ukraine, the Commission is only trying to mitigate the consequences of its completion,”  the EC representative explained.
