The EU has declared its readiness to cooperate with the Trump administration.

The European Commission said that, despite the harsh statements of US President-elect Donald Trump about the need for Greenland (currently an autonomous territory of Denmark) to join the United States, they intend to cooperate closely with the new American administration to strengthen the transatlantic agenda.

Trump on Tuesday, speaking at his Mar-a-Lago residence, said Greenland should become part of the United States, emphasizing its strategic importance for national security and the defense of the “free world,” including from China and Russia. However, he refused to promise not to use military force to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal.

“We will not comment on individual statements. Our principle is that the sovereignty of countries must be respected… For our part, we look forward to working with the new administration in the United States to strengthen transatlantic relations on common topics and goals in common strategic interests,”  the official representative of the EU foreign policy service Anitta Hipper said at a briefing in Brussels, answering a relevant question from Danish journalists.

They also refused to explain what countermeasures would be taken at the EU level if Trump carried out the threat and introduced economic measures against Denmark. The EKlish called this situation “too hypothetical.
