Seismologists recorded 515 aftershocks after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, the China Seismological Center said.

“As of 8:00 on January 8, a total of 515 aftershocks were recorded, including 488 aftershocks with a magnitude below 3.0, 27 aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0 and above, in particular 24 with a magnitude from 3.0 to 3.9 and three – with a magnitude from 4.0 to 4.9″, – indicated in the material.


The maximum aftershock of magnitude 4.4 was recorded approximately 18 kilometers from the epicenter of the main shock.


An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred on Tuesday at 09:05 local time in Tingri County, Shigatse County in the Tibet Autonomous Region, the source of the earthquake was located at a depth of ten kilometers.

According to the latest data, 126 people were killed, another 188 received injuries of varying severity.
