Seismologists recorded 49 aftershocks after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China, the China Seismological Center reports.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred on Tuesday at 9.05 local time in Tingri County, Shigatse County, Tibet Autonomous Region, the source of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. The operational headquarters for providing assistance to earthquake victims in the Tibet Autonomous Region reported 32 dead and 38 injured.

“As of 12:00 on January 7, a total of 49 aftershocks were recorded, including 33 aftershocks with a magnitude below 3.0, 16 aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0 and above, in particular 13 with a magnitude from 3.0 to 3.9 and three – magnitude from 4.0 to 4.9. The maximum aftershock of magnitude 4.4 was recorded in approximately 18 kilometers from the epicenter of the main shock,” the center said in a statement.
