Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad will arrive on Monday on an official three-day visit to Tunisia, according to the Tunisian Foreign Ministry.
⠀
“At the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mr. Nabil Ammar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic, Dr. Faisal Mikdad, will pay a working visit to our country from April 17 to 19, 2023,” the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in social networks.
⠀
It is noted that the visit is intended to show the desire of Damascus and Tunisia to restore full-fledged relations.
⠀
On Wednesday, the Al-Watan newspaper, citing sources, wrote that Mikdad would visit Tunisia next week. The visit, as noted by the sources, will take place against the backdrop of the appointment of Tunisia’s ambassador to Syria, Mohammed al-Mahzibi. His credentials were sent to Damascus.
⠀
Earlier, the Syrian state agency SANA, citing a joint statement by the Syrian and Tunisian authorities, reported that Damascus decided to reopen the Syrian embassy in Tunisia and appoint an ambassador in response to the initiative of Tunisian President Qais Said.
⠀
Tunisia broke off relations with Syria, like many other Arab countries, after the outbreak of armed conflict in that country more than a decade ago. In February of this year, the President of Tunisia announced his intention to appoint an ambassador to that country.
