The head of the European Commission will discuss Ukraine’s accession to the EU in Kyiv.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that she arrived in Kyiv to discuss the path of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“I’m glad to be back in Kyiv… I’m here to discuss Ukraine’s path to joining the EU,” the head of the European Commission wrote on the social network X.

She said she would discuss financial support for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian parliamentarian Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported that von der Leyen had arrived in Kyiv and was going to speak in the Verkhovna Rada.

The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, previously stated in an interview with Spiegel that Ukraine, if all the required conditions are met, can join the European Union in 2030, even if this will not be an easy task, and recalled that a number of Balkan countries have been waiting for membership for 20 years.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba previously stated that Ukraine wants to begin negotiations on membership in the European Union by the end of the year.

On February 28, 2022, Vladimir Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine to join the European Union.

The heads of state and government of the European Union at the summit in Brussels on June 23, 2022 approved the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova for membership in the union. The European Commission, in its recommendations to grant Ukraine EU candidate status, set seven conditions. Judicial reform is the most comprehensive among the EU conditions: the Ukrainian government needs to reform the Constitutional Court, complete changes to the Supreme Council of Justice and the High Qualifications Commission of Judges, and continue the fight against corruption.
