The Estonian parliament has legalized same-sex marriage.

The Estonian parliament has legalized same-sex marriage.

The Estonian parliament on Tuesday passed a law that provides for the possibility of marriage between two adults, regardless of their gender, the press service of the legislature said.

“According to the adopted law, now two adults can marry, regardless of their gender. 55 members of parliament voted for this decision, 34 were against. The law will enter into force on January 1, 2024,” the message says.

Now in Estonia, same-sex couples can also adopt children. The law establishes the principle that a child cannot have more than two parents. The principle remains that the rights and obligations in relation to the child primarily belong to his biological parents, the press service of the parliament notes.
