Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised unprecedented investments in the country’s defense if his party wins early elections.

“We will ensure an unprecedented increase in investment in our armed forces so that we can protect every inch of our territory while we help our allies abroad,” Carney said at a meeting with supporters, broadcast on the social network X.

Earlier, Carney said that he had asked the Governor-General of the country, Mary Simon, to dissolve parliament and set early elections for April 28.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for Canada’s accession to the United States, pointing out that the northern neighbor does not spend enough on defense, relying on Washington’s protection.
