The Armenian parliament has adopted a law on the country’s intention to join the EU

On Wednesday, the Armenian parliament adopted in the second and final reading a bill on the country’s intention to join the European Union, despite the fact that the union itself did not offer membership to the country, and the opposition called the document legally absurd.

“64 deputies voted for the adoption of the bill, seven against it. The decision has been made,” Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said during the meeting, presenting the voting results.

The document was supported only by deputies of the ruling Civil Contract party, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said during the discussion of the document that the adoption of the bill was not an application for EU membership, but reflected a desire to deepen relations with the union. He added that in the near future, Armenia and the European Union will approve a new partnership agenda in line with the adopted law.
