Scholz told how the EC would react to the imposition of duties by the United States

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the European Commission will be able to respond within a few hours in the event of the imposition of duties on goods from the European Union announced by the US president.

“I’m betting on cooperation, not confrontation.… But if the United States does take such steps (imposing duties), the European Commission will be able to respond within a few hours,” Scholz said.

He expressed the opinion that globalization is beneficial for Germany as a country with a developed export-oriented industry, and this state of affairs should be maintained.

“Therefore, I advocate that we, as the European Union, stick together and make it clear that the EU, with its 450 million inhabitants, is strong and capable of acting,” the politician said.

On February 1, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose import duties on EU goods because Brussels treats Washington “terribly.” A representative of the European Commission said on February 2 that the European Union does not have data on the imposition of additional duties on European goods by the United States, but is ready to “respond decisively” if they are introduced.
