Scholz said he had little reason to talk to Putin.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Nürnberger Nachrichten that the current development of the conflict in Ukraine gave him little reason to talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that he would negotiate when the time was right.

“The last phone conversation was in December last year. The current development of the war in recent times gives little reason to talk, but I will do it again at the right time to advance our goals,” said Scholz.

Scholz said last week that he plans to talk to Putin soon.

As German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit told reporters in February, despite the difference in opinions about the conflict in Ukraine, the German authorities consider it necessary to maintain regular contact with the Russian Federation “in the hope of some progress.”
