The possible victory of Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party in the French parliamentary elections is a problem for France and the EU, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
⠀
At a press conference on Wednesday, the president was asked whether he believed that the strengthened positions of the RN after the European Parliament elections and his decision to dissolve the National Assembly could mean weakening support for Kyiv and Europe itself.
⠀
“You are right, the policy of the National Rally towards Ukraine is different from the one we follow. You are right, the RN has always had an ambivalent attitude towards Russia, and I think this is a problem for Europe and for France,” Macron said during the press-conference, which was broadcast on the LCI TV channel.
⠀
In his opinion, politicians in the EU must warn the electorate against the coming to power of the far right, since in this case “the policies that are being pursued now will no longer be possible.”
⠀
In the European Parliament elections in France on Sunday, the National Rally party more than doubled the lead of the coalition of supporters of President Emmanuel Macron, gaining 31.36% of the vote.
⠀
Macron subsequently announced the dissolution of the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament, and the holding of early parliamentary elections in two rounds – June 30 and July 7.
