Japan called for preventing escalation on the Korean Peninsula.

The Japanese authorities consider it important to prevent an escalation of the situation on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK undermined a number of sections of inter-Korean roads, Deputy Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet Kazuhiko Aoki said during a press conference.

“We are aware of the reports (regarding demolition work). It is important that these actions do not lead to an escalation of the situation and increased tension between the DPRK and South Korea,” he said.

Aoki added that the Japanese government “will take all measures to collect, analyze information and monitor North Korea’s subsequent actions.”

The day before, the Yonhap agency, citing the South Korean military, reported that the DPRK blew up sections of two inter-Korean highways on its side of the border. Prior to this, the General Staff of North Korea announced that from October 9 the country would carry out work to block and interrupt all roads and railways connecting its territory with the “main enemy” – South Korea, and would fortify defensive structures, which it notified American troops about in order to avoid clashes .
