If the United States intervenes in its internal affairs, China will take strong measures to protect sovereignty and national interests, Yang Jiechi, head of the office of the CPC Central Committee Foreign Affairs Commission, said in a telephone conversation with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
⠀
According to Yang Jiechi, recently Washington has made several “incorrect actions and statements” by interfering in China’s internal affairs.
⠀
“China will take decisive action to protect its sovereignty and security interests, and we will turn our words into reality,” the politician said.
⠀
He clarified that the Taiwan issue is the most important, sensitive and key in Sino-US relations, and if the US insists on playing the “Taiwan card” and continues on the wrong path, this will inevitably lead to a dangerous situation.
⠀
“We call on the United States to clearly understand the situation, strictly adhere to the commitments, and abide by the One China principle and the three joint Sino-US communiqués,” Yang said.

Official relations between the PRC central government and Taiwan broke down in 1949 after the defeated Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek moved to the island in 1949. Beijing does not recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty and is jealous of other countries’ contacts with Taiwan, insisting on a “one-China policy.” It implies that Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory, and that the PRC authorities are the only legitimate Chinese government.
