Brussels responded to reports of US strikes in Syria and Iraq.

Belgian Foreign Minister Aja Labib, as well as EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, called for restraint amid US strikes on targets in Syria and Iraq in response to an attack on a US military base in Jordan.

“We call for restraint, we know that violence can never be the answer. We are aware of US strikes on Iranian targets in Iraq and Syria… This is concerning, we call for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy. This is the only way to achieve de-escalation of the situation in the Middle East,”  the head of the Belgian Foreign Ministry said before the start of an informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union in Brussels.

In turn, Borrell noted that “we urge everyone to try to avoid escalation, of course, this will be on the agenda (of the meeting of foreign ministers on Saturday).”

“We are experiencing a critical situation in the Middle East,” he added.
