Belgium PM Charles Michel resigns after government collapses in dispute over UN migration pact

Prime minister Michel was forced to offer his resignation to the King of the Belgians after the Socialist party proposed a vote of no confidence in his cabinet, Guardian reported. The cause od resignation is the signing the UN migration pact.

Belgian PM lost the support of the Flemish nationalist N-VA in one week. The largest party in his coalition believes that international non-binding UN deal will open the door to greater migration. After Michel’s resignation, Belgium is now braced for a snap election in January. In answer to calls for an early election, Michel refused, saying it would only lead to “stagnation for the whole of 2019”.

King Philippe of Belgium received prime minister and is now expected to hold consultations between the political parties before calling elections next month. The migrant crisis slowly changes the political arena in the different countries of the European Union.

Meantime, the Flemish nationalist party N-VA with its hardline views on immigration, walked out of the government earlier this month over Michel’s signature to a UN migration pact providing for a common global approach to migrant flows. The Belgians have been protested during the week, criticising the signing of the UN migration pact because increasing of migrant flow doesn’t make their country better but worsening the criminal situation.
