Polling stations for the presidential elections in Romania have opened in all localities; on Sunday, the country’s residents elect the head of state for the next five years.

In Romania, presidential elections are held on Sunday, they are held every five years. There is no turnout threshold in the country; elections will be recognized as valid with any number of participants.

At 7.00 almost 19 thousand polling stations across Romania began operating. Romanian citizens who live abroad vote for three days in a row; polling stations opened for them on November 22.

13 candidates are running for the post of President of Romania: former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, ex-chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana, current head of the PSD, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Speaker of the Senate, head of the National Liberal Party Nicolae Ciuca, leader of the Union for the salvation of Romania” Elena Lasconi, chairman of the “Union for the Unification of Romanians” George Simion, leader of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania Kelemen Hunor, head of the National Conservative Party of Romania Christian Terges, representative of the Alternative Party for National Dignity Alexandra Pacuraru, founder of the New Romania party Sebastian Popescu, former deputy head of the Romanian intelligence service, candidate from the National Action League party Silviu Predoiu, and independent candidates Ana Birkhall, Cristian Diaconescu and Calin Georgescu.

According to Romanian legislation, the winner of the presidential election is the candidate who receives more than half of the votes included in the lists. If the vote is less than 50%, then in two weeks there will be a second round of elections, where the winner is declared the one who gets a simple majority. Polling stations will close at 21:00.
