Spain’s King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia have cut short their visit to areas hit by deadly rain and floods in the autonomous community of Valencia, the royal house said on Sunday.

The King and Queen arrived in Valencia on Sunday to visit Paiporta and Chiva, two communities hit hard by floods.

“By joint agreement of the state and regional authorities and the Royal House, the visit to Chiva has been postponed,” the Royal House said in a statement.

It was previously reported that upon arriving in Paiportu, the monarchs were attacked by the assembled people. Some of them tried to throw mud at the royal retinue. They shouted insults at Philip VI and Letizia, calling them “murderers.” Meanwhile, both the king and queen tried to reconcile with the people who turned to them.

In light of the devastating floods, a number of prominent figures and politicians in Spain have expressed their dissatisfaction with the actions of both the central government and regional authorities, accusing them of failing to prevent a disaster of this magnitude and cope with its consequences.

It was previously reported that the Spanish government will attract another 5 thousand troops to help areas in Valencia. In addition, Madrid will send an additional 5 thousand law enforcement officers to the autonomous community.

On October 29, heavy downpours occurred in different regions of Spain. The southern and eastern regions of the country were particularly hard hit, where the weather danger level was raised to its maximum. The death toll from the floods has exceeded 211 people. The disaster has severely damaged road infrastructure in Valencia, the worst-hit region in eastern Spain, resulting in more than 60 road closures.
