The American TV channel CNN accused Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump of deliberately distorting the statements of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in his latest campaign video.
⠀
One of the fragments of Trump’s video contains a reference to a New York Times article stating that Harris “is seeking to significantly increase taxes.”
⠀
However, as noted in the material published on CNN’s website ahead of the November 5 election, the original was about raising taxes only on the wealthiest citizens and large corporations, and not on all Americans, as viewers of the ad might perceive.
⠀
Another example concerns migration policy. Trump’s video claims Harris promised to continue incumbent President Joe Biden’s “border” policies while declaring her support for “open borders.” In fact, according to CNN, Harris emphasized the need for strict measures to regulate migration.
⠀
The ad also features the phrase “benefits for illegal immigrants” from a 2018 NBC News article, which was used to hint at Harris’s liberal policies on migrants. However, the original story discussed the topic of work licenses for DACA participants, not welfare policies.
⠀
The video concludes by using the phrase “global war,” taken from an Axios article, to hint at geopolitical instability under the Biden administration. However, the original article, as the TV channel notes, contained a thesis about US preparedness for potential future threats, and not an assessment of the current situation.
⠀
The Trump campaign did not comment on the allegations to CNN, but its spokeswoman Caroline Levitt previously said that the Republican candidate’s team has “the strongest and highest quality advertising.”
