The number of charges against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina continues to rise and currently stands at 198.

The politician is accused of 177 murders, 11 crimes against humanity and genocide, kidnappings, and attacks on opposition supporters. Authorities are investigating the allegations as part of a nationwide investigation into the deaths of hundreds of anti-government protesters in July and August. The charges allege that from July 15 to August 5, on the orders of Sheikh Hasina and other leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League party, police opened fire indiscriminately on protesters, resulting in numerous casualties.

Similar charges have been brought against several dozen other people, including former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and the head of the Ministry of Justice Anisur Rahman. The accused also include the former chief minister’s sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed.

According to the Bangladeshi authorities, the numerous accusations against Sheikh Hasina of various crimes should serve to promptly bring the politician to justice at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
