The EU should not depend on the results of the US elections, the head of the European Council said.

The European Union should not depend on “electoral cycles in the United States”, but should independently ensure its security and even switch to a “war economy” mode,  the head of the European Council, Charles Michel said.

“We must be better prepared in defense matters and switch to a war economy. The time has come to take responsibility for our own security. We cannot continue to be dependent on the electoral cycles in the United States,”  the Belgian politician, who is due to leave office in the fall head of the European Council said.

Previously, EU states, most of which are also members of NATO, amid fears of Donald Trump coming to power in the United States, increasingly began to discuss issues of European defense, common standards, joint defense orders and military planning. It is also proposed to introduce a new position of European Commissioner for Defense.

As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously reported, the share of EU countries in the alliance’s defense spending is only 20%.
