Sullivan is confident that the sanctions will not prevent him from contacting Russia.

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan expressed confidence that the sanctions imposed on him and other US officials would not interfere with their contacts with Russia, if necessary.

“Many of us in the US government are under sanctions imposed by the Russian government. I am under Russian sanctions… That wouldn’t stop us from talking to the Russians if it were necessary for global stability and security,” he said, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum.

Sullivan set this approach as an example for the Chinese military, who explain the refusal to contact the Pentagon with American sanctions against the Chinese defense minister.

Almost all of Russia’s top leadership, including President Vladimir Putin, is under US sanctions.
