In Italy, the number of COVID-19 infections has increased significantly.

The increase in the number of coronavirus infections in Italy was 44% over the week, according to a special bulletin from the country’s Ministry of Health.

Between September 7 and September 13, almost 31 thousand cases of infection were recorded in the country; earlier, 23 thousand new patients were registered during the same period.

The infection rate in relation to the total population has similarly increased – over the past week it reached 52 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

“Taking into account the epidemiological situation corresponding to the framework at European level and the beginning of the school year in the country, it is proposed to strengthen the planned protection and prevention measures, paying particular attention to the vaccination campaign,” the document says.

Against the backdrop of rising infections, last Friday the Ministry of Health again made testing for COVID-19 mandatory for those admitted to emergency departments with relevant symptoms. The test has also become necessary for those who have to transfer from one institution to another and for entry into care homes for the disabled and the elderly.
