Hungary opposed the transfer of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers to Ukraine.

Hungary opposed the transfer of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers to Ukraine.

At a meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU countries, a proposal was made to move the informal meeting of the heads of foreign affairs departments to Ukraine. Hungary is against it and considers it wrong, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó said.

The politician said that the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, had previously proposed not to hold an informal council of EU foreign ministers in Budapest due to the visits of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the Russian Federation and China, but to convene it in Brussels. Szijjártó called this behavior “kindergartenish.”

“There were those who thought that they would carry out terrible revenge and proposed holding a council of foreign ministers in Ukraine. To convene a meeting of the foreign ministers of EU countries outside the EU, unanimity is needed. I said that, regardless of the fact that Hungary is one of the candidates. .. we do not agree to this and generally do not consider it right to hold a meeting outside the EU,” Szijjarto said.

According to him, for Hungary “it does not matter much” whether the council of foreign ministers will take place in Budapest.
