The Slovak opposition will propose a vote of no confidence in Fico’s government.

The Slovak opposition will submit to parliament in the coming days a proposal for a vote of no confidence in the government of Robert Fico,  the head of the pro-European Progressive Slovakia party Michal Šimečka said.

“We, all opposition parties, will submit a motion for a vote of no confidence (in the government) in the coming days,” he said at a press conference.

All opposition parties represented in the country’s parliament took part in the event.

Opposition MPs are mainly dissatisfied with the foreign policy course of the Slovak Prime Minister, which, in their opinion, alienates Bratislava from Brussels, contributing to its isolation from European partners. According to Šimečka, in addition to the 71 opposition members, at least four more deputies from parties that are part of the government coalition are critical of Fico’s foreign policy.

To pass a vote of no confidence in the government of Slovakia, the votes of at least 76 of the 150 deputies of the republic’s parliament are needed.

The Slovak Prime Minister has repeatedly opposed providing military assistance to Ukraine. He also noted that he does not support this country’s membership in NATO, and would use the right of veto if such an issue was considered.

In addition, Fico stated that Bratislava is interested in good relations with Moscow and promised to take steps in this direction. The politician called dialogue between the two countries necessary and rejected the idea that, because of the conflict in Ukraine, it is necessary to pretend that Russia does not exist.
