Germany opposed the increase in defense costs in NATO

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius opposed the US Donald Trump proposed by President Donald Trump up to 5% of the GDP of Member countries.

“Five percent of our GDP corresponds to 42% of the federal budget – it would be almost every second euro that the federal government spends 230 billion euros. We could not afford it and could not spend so much,” Pistorius said.

He also emphasized that any NATO decisions are made following a collective discussion.

According to the Minister of Defense, Germany, it is necessary to contribute to the defense capacity of NATO, corresponding to its scale – and this is what Berlin has to do in the next 10 years.

“One thing is clear: in the future, Germany will have to spend more on defense, even more than 2% of its GDP that the government currently allocates,” Pistorius added.

Earlier it became known that the Trump team told European officials that the new administration would demand from NATO members to increase the defense of the defense to 5% of GDP. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that defense expenses should significantly exceed the current indicator of 2%.
