A prominent journalist who headed a radio station was shot dead in Colombia.

A prominent journalist who headed a radio station was killed in the Sucre department in northern Colombia, the Colombian Foundation for Freedom of the Press (FLIP) reported.

“The director of the Sonora Estéreo radio station, Mardonio Mejia Mendoza, was shot dead on the night of January 24 in the city of San Pedro, Sucre department, by killers on a motorcycle,” the organization said in a statement.

One of the alleged perpetrators of the murder was detained on the same day; authorities do not rule out that the murder was committed because of the professional activities of Mejia, whom FLIP calls “one of the most recognized journalists in the region.”

The foundation called on the Attorney General’s Office to “quickly and adequately investigate the facts, taking into account Mejia’s journalistic activities, and bring to justice those responsible for the murder.”

He also called on the San Pedro mayor’s office to “lead security strategies that include press protection.”
