Bank of England will retain plastic £5 note, vegan protest

Bank of England defended its position on plastic banknotes, the top management of the country’s central bank believes that new polymer notes outweigh animal fat concerns.

The Bank of England has released the innovative £5 banknotes in September, that caused the loud protests from the vegans but the top management decided not to withdraw the polymer money from circulation.

The protests from vegans, animal rights activists and several religious groups stressed that the polymer banknotes contain traces of animal fat. The Bank of England has its own view. Moreover, despite the protests, the main bank of the UK decided to push ahead with production of the new £10 plastic note. which is due to be issued in September. It has spent £70m on making the plastic fivers and tenners so far.

“Withdrawing £5 polymer banknotes and stopping production of £10 polymer banknotes would have significant implications for the Bank’s anti-counterfeiting strategy and threaten continuity of supply of banknotes to the public.”
