Tokyo will check the site of a water leak containing fluoride at a US air base.

Representatives of the Ministry of Defense, Tokyo City Hall and local authorities are investigating and inspecting the site of a water leak containing fluoride at a US airbase, Deputy Government Secretary-General Fumitoshi Sato said at a press conference in Tokyo.

“It was reported that in October there was a leak of water containing PFAS in the area of the fire training site at the US Yokota Air Base. Taking into account the wishes of local authorities, we coordinated with the American side to conduct an on-site inspection. As a result, today representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the relevant departments, together with the Tokyo mayor’s office and the local administration, will inspect the fire drill site at the air base, and will also receive explanations from the American side,” Sato said.

PFAS, synthetic chemical compounds containing fluorine, pose a serious threat in terms of environmental pollution. The problem of PFAS contamination in the area of American bases is being raised by the Japanese public, primarily in Okinawa, where about 70% of American bases in Japan are concentrated. Yokota Airfield is located in Tokyo, on its western outskirts.
