The new Syrian authorities have appointed the head of the Foreign Ministry in the interim government.

The new Syrian authorities have appointed Assad Hassan al-Shibani as foreign minister in the country’s interim government, the Syrian news agency SANA reported on Saturday.

“The General Command announces the appointment of Mr. Assad Hassan al-Shibani to the post of head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the new Syrian government,” the agency said.

On December 8, representatives of the armed opposition in Syria seized state television in Damascus and announced on air that they had established control over the country. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that he and several ministers remain in the country and have established contact with the leadership of the armed opposition.
