The Syrian army has repelled a Kurdish attack in Aleppo

Army units repelled an attack by the Kurdish formations of the “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF) in the area of the Ashrafiya quarter in the city of Aleppo, the Syrian news agency SANA reported, citing the official representative of the Ministry of Defense of the SAR Hassan Abdelghani.

The SDF is a military coalition formed in 2015 in northeastern Syria with the support of an international coalition led by the United States. It consists mainly of Kurdish formations, but it also includes some Arab tribes and Assyrians. The SDF was created under the pretext of fighting the IS terrorist group.

“Our forces repelled an attack by the SDF forces in the direction of Ashrafiya in the city of Aleppo. The attacking groups suffered losses,” Abdelghani said.

After the change of power in the country in early December last year, the Kurdish armed groups retained control over the Ashrafiya and Sheikh Maqsood neighborhoods in Aleppo, where the Kurdish population mainly lives. At that time, agreements were reached with the armed opposition in order to avoid clashes.

SDF Commander-in-chief Abdi Mazlum said in an interview in late January that the Kurdish self-defense forces were not fighting with the armed forces of the new government in Damascus, noting that the Kurdish delegation then held extended talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa for the transitional period, during which mutual understanding was reached on many issues related to the future political the structure of Syria, and how the armed forces will be formed.
