Former Defense Minister Ishiba will become the new Prime Minister of Japan.

Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba was elected chairman of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who will become the country’s next prime minister, following the results of the second round of voting.


The voting was broadcast on the party’s website.
According to the results of the first round, 67-year-old Ishiba received 154 votes. His opponent in the second round was 63-year-old Sanae Takaichi, who received 181 votes.


At the end of the second round, Shigeru Ishiba received 215 of 415 votes, and Sanae Takaichi received 194.

An extraordinary meeting of parliament, at which the leader of the LDP is expected to become the new prime minister of the country, will be held on October 1.
