Biden has announced that he is withdrawing from the presidential race.

Current US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that he will not seek re-election to a second term from the Democratic Party, but intends to serve out his current term.

“I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country for me to step down and focus on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on his social media.

He promised to give more details about his decision in an address to the nation later this week.

The American media agree that the current head of the White House performed poorly at the first debate with Donald Trump. He stammered and paused, did not always formulate his thoughts clearly, and after the event, the television camera caught the moment when Biden’s wife Jill helped him down the stairs.

Against this background, calls among Democrats to nominate another candidate have become increasingly common. Vice President Kamala Harris is considered the most likely contender.

Everything will be decided at the Democratic Party Convention, which will be held from August 19 to 22 in Chicago. The procedure will be virtually arbitrary: there is no mechanism for appointing a successor to a yet-to-be-confirmed US presidential candidate. This means that at the convention, whoever receives the majority of the nearly four thousand votes of delegates will receive the nomination. If there is no winner in the first round, 700 superdelegates will join the voting – these are the most honorable and famous Democrats, former presidents and congressmen.

Their votes will be decisive.

The US presidential elections will take place on November 5th.
