WHO has recognized Egypt as a malaria-free country. The WHO added that the achievement was the result of “nearly 100 years of efforts by the Egyptian government and people” to prevent the disease, which has been prevalent in the country since ancient times. WHO grants malaria-free status to a country if it provides detailed and reliable evidence that the chain of transmission of malaria-carrying mosquitoes has been interrupted throughout its entire territory for at least the last three years. Malaria is an infection transmitted through a mosquito bite. WHO previously reported that despite progress, the African region continues to be hit hardest by the deadly disease.

The EC has promised to allocate 50 million euros for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged an additional 50 million euros for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, where thousands of civilians have lost their homes or been forced to leave after Israeli strikes and amid a possible ground operation by the Israeli military.

“The European Commission will immediately increase the humanitarian aid package provided for the Gaza Strip by 50 million euros, bringing it to 75 million euros. We will continue to work closely with the UN and its agencies to ensure that this assistance reaches those in need in the Gaza Strip,” –  von der Leyen said.

At the same time, the EC recalled that the European Union supports Israel’s right to self-defense, but in full compliance with international humanitarian law.

Previously, the European Commission announced the suspension of aid to the Palestinians, but later this statement was actually canceled due to the disagreement of a number of member states. As a result, the EC decided to limit itself to checking how these funds are spent and whether they end up at the disposal of the Hamas movement.
