The Indian Prime Minister congratulated the African Union on its admission to the G20.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the African Union on its admission to the G20 as a permanent member of the group.

“India proposes to make the African Union a permanent member of the G20 and I am confident that all members will agree to this proposal. With the support of all of you, I invite the African Union to join the G20,” Modi said in his speech at the first session G20 summit.

After Modi’s words, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanian Jaishankar approached the President of the Comoros and Chairman of the African Union, Azalee Assoumani, and escorted him to a seat at the table where members of the G20 meet and placed a sign and flag of the African Union in front of him.

In June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to G20 leaders proposing that the African Union be given full membership of the group.
